GUCA Members Help Upgrade Property at Girl Scout Camp

Members of GUCA have finished work on Camp Misty Mountain of the Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia

Camp Misty Mountain is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in northwest Georgia, surrounded by national forest with a 100-acre lake. With more than 900 acres of fields and forest, the property is a secluded yet accessible mountain getaway for Girl Scouts of every age. Although the council has had the property for almost 30 years, in the past 10 years the camp has been developed to accommodate year-round camping and a summer resident camp to support, motivate, and reassure young girls that they can succeed at camp and in life.

Due to intense use, a site that was never properly graded, and the lack of any runoff control measures, the horse paddock at Camp Misty Mountain had developed runoff problems, threatening to contaminate Lake Marvin.  Girl Scouts of America and Prime Engineering Inc., in conjunction with Willow Construction, Inc., developed a grading and drainage plan to alleviate this problem.  Willow took the lead in managing the implementation of this plan, coordinating the efforts of several GUCA volunteer members. The total cost of the completed project that covered over 10 acres is $32,000.00.

The following GUCA member companies participated by donating substantial time, labor, and materials to the project:

EFS, Inc., installed of 900 feet of silt & tree save fence; Southeast Culvert, provided 360’ of 18” high-density polyethylene pipe at reduced cost, Southeastern Clearing Systems, LLC, cleared the 10 acre site; Strack, Inc., supplied 24’ of 30 inch reinforced concrete pipe; and, Willow Construction, Inc., provided grading and storm drain installation.

Other contractors Everett Construction, Inc., of Rome, and Cal-Mar Services, of White, also made significant contributions of both time and material.
