GUCA Student Chapter Success Stories!

With its continued efforts to expand the utility construction industry into the younger generation, the Georgia Utility Contractors Association, Inc. is proud to announce the commencement of its first Student Chapter at Southern Polytechnic State University.

The Chartering Ceremony was held on Saturday, October 26, 2002 at Dave and Busters restaurant in Marietta. GUCA’s Education Committee Chairman Dan Coder, Western Summit Constructors, Inc., spoke as the GUCA representative. Other special guest presenters were GUCA members Alan Gravel, Willow Construction, Inc.; Ronnie Bennett, Andrews Excavation, Inc. and Jim Goyer, Archer Western Contractors, Ltd., both of whom are Southern Polytechnic alumni.

The purpose of this Student Chapter is to help inform the students about the different aspects of utility construction and the multitude of opportunities available to them within the utility construction industry. GUCA plans to provide several speakers from the utility construction industry, including alumni of the Southern Polytechnic Construction Program, who will be able to give the students information on careers they can pursue in utility construction and what to expect after graduation. There will also be sponsored field trips to construction sites and Safety Awareness presentations to help give the students a more hands-on approach to the utility construction industry.

GUCA would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Khalid M. Siddiqi, Southern Polytechnic State University, Dr. Gouranga Banik, Southern Polytechnic State University and the National Utility Contractors Association, Inc. for their dedication and help in making the GUCA Student Chapter a reality.

The GUCA Student Chapter will hold their meetings on the first Tuesday of each month and encourage all interested students to attend. GUCA is excited about the response to this first chapter and plans to extend Student Chapters to other schools around the state.

The GUCA Student Chapter at Southern Polytechnic is made possible by a grant from the NUCA Education Foundation.
